Thursday 7th May

Hello Year 6.

I would like you reflect on what you have learnt about V.E day, what it means for the soldiers, their families, those keeping Britain moving and the Government. I have attached a template for you to use as a guide to organising your thoughts.

Then look at the picture on the attached sheet. Another primary source taken from an actual V.E day street party. I would like you to choose a person from the picture to write a diary entry about their experience of VE day based on what you have learnt this week.

Think about:

  • Do they know someone fighting?
  • Have they lost anyone in the war?
  • How have they coped with rationing?
  • How do they feel about the Germans?
  • Have they been evacuated?
  • Do they expect things to now return
to normal?
  • Has the war changed the world?

Remember to include:

  • First person
  • Range of punctuation
  • Emotive language
  • Different openers
  • Paragraphs

For maths I have set you a series of mission which will require your mathematical knowledge of addition, subtraction and time. Read your mission tasks carefully, choose a ship from the ship cards and decide which vessel will be best suited to complete your mission. Record the number of the mission, the name of the vessel and the time you would need to leave England and what time you would arrive in Dunkirk.

Finally, I would like you to plan your own V.E Day party for tomorrow. It could be in theory or you may be able to have your own small celebration with your family.

Use the planning sheet to decide, if you were to have a party, what you would need.

You might want to design and make some of your own bunting to decorate your garden or home. People celebrate in different ways, it could even be with a 1 minutes silences to reflect on being thankful it ended.
