Year 6 Class

Welcome to Class 6.

The staff team in year 6 are Miss Huntley, Mrs Prest, Mrs Eadsforth and Mrs Dickinson. Our job this year is to make sure you not only learn new knowledge and skills and make the most of your final year at St. Cuthbert’s but you become ready to move onto Secondary School.

Miss Huntley is your teacher and Mrs Prest your teaching Assistant. Mrs Prest will be in every morning and some afternoons. Mrs Eadsforth will be in class on a Tuesday afternoon teaching you Design and Technology and Mrs Dickinson will be in one afternoon carrying out some interventions.

In the Autumn Term we learn about the Great Wars in history and our local heritage linked to the Great Wars in our geography. We will get out and about to see how Seaham was affected. In English we will be reading texts linked to the Great Wars starting with Michael Morpurgo’s The Poppy Field and The Christmas Truce linked to WW1. We will also be exploring war poetry. Towards the end of the Autumn Term/beginning of Spring Term we will begin our novel, Goodnight Mr Tom linked to WW2 where we will learn more about the Blitz and evacuees.

Mrs Prest loves maths and she will give you lots of tips and tricks to help you. You will have great fun trying to beat her with your arithmetic knowledge on a Monday. Our science topics are classification and light and where possible we will carrying out investigations and practical lessons. We like to get creative in year 6, so in the Autumn Term we will using our sketch books and trying our hand at some observational drawings. For PE this term, we do tag rugby, sportshall athletics and gymnastics. Your PE days this term are Wednesday and Thursday.

We won’t be working in just our bubbles anymore so this means you can play with all of your friends at break and lunch times and have the opportunity to spend time and play with your Reception Class buddies who you will meet in September once they have settled in.
