Remote Education

At St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child continues to feel valued, supported and inspired in their learning, whether in school or learning from home. Should remote education be necessary, we will work closely with families to provide high-quality learning opportunities which maintain our strong sense of community, faith and aspiration for all.

When Remote Education Will Be Provided

Remote education may be provided in circumstances such as school closures or class closures where pupils are unable to attend school but are well enough to learn from home. There may also be other exceptional circumstances where individual pupils are absent but able to access learning, which will be considered on a case-by-case basis in partnership with families.

Accessing Remote Learning

St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School uses Microsoft Teams to provide remote learning where necessary. This platform is managed through our Academy Trust, with learning planned and delivered by class teachers.

  • All KS2 pupils already have individual school login accounts and are familiar with accessing Teams through signing into school laptops
  • KS1 parents will be provided with individual login details needed
  • Reception pupils will access learning through Tapestry

Learning materials will primarily be posted within the Assignments section of Microsoft Teams.

Families requiring support with logins or technical issues should contact Mrs Parlett via the school office.

Daily Learning Expectations

The amount of remote learning provided will vary slightly depending on the age of the children and is in line with DfE Expectations:

Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception)
Learning activities will be practical, play-based and appropriate for young children. Short activities will be provided throughout the day through Tapestry, with an emphasis on communication, reading, phonics, number work and learning through play.

Key Stage 1
Pupils in Key Stage 1 will typically access approximately 3 hours of learning each day, including a mixture of live teaching, independent activities and reading tasks.

Key Stage 2
Pupils in Key Stage 2 will typically access approximately 4 to 4.5 hours of learning each day, including live lessons, independent work, reading and foundation subjects.
Some activities may require adult support, particularly for younger pupils.

Learning will include:

  • One or two live teaching sessions each day
  • Recorded lessons and teacher-input videos where appropriate
  • Independent learning activities
  • Daily reading activities
  • Spelling practice
  • Maths fluency tasks
  • Prayer and Religious Education activities

Some activities, such as reading to an adult and practising spellings, may require support from parents or carers.

Additional online learning platforms may include:

  • Spelling Shed
  • TT Rock Stars
  • Maths.co.uk
  • SPaG.com
  • Reading Plus

Curriculum Provision

Remote learning will continue to reflect the broad and balanced curriculum taught in school wherever possible.

Subjects may include:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Spelling and phonics
  • Mathematics
  • Religious Education and prayer
  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Other foundation subjects where appropriate

Teachers will aim to provide a balance of live teaching, recorded sessions, independent tasks and practical activities.

Support for Pupils with SEND

At St Cuthbert’s, we recognise that some pupils may require additional support to access remote learning successfully. In keeping with our inclusive Catholic ethos, reasonable adjustments will be made to support individual needs.

Support may include:

  • Adapted or differentiated learning resources
  • Small-group live teaching sessions
  • Additional adult guidance where appropriate
  • Regular phone calls or email communication with parents and carers
  • Tailored support for pupils depending on need
  • Flexible approaches to tasks and timetables where necessary

Families of pupils with SEND are encouraged to remain in contact with school so that support can be reviewed and adapted where needed.

For SEND support, please contact Mrs Lambert (SENCO) through the school office.

Support with Devices and Internet Access

Families experiencing difficulties accessing suitable devices or internet connectivity should contact the school office. Staff will work with families to explore what support may be available.

Feedback and Engagement

Teachers will provide feedback through:

  • Live teaching sessions
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Comments on submitted work where appropriate

Staff will monitor pupil engagement and participation in remote learning. Where pupils are not engaging regularly, school staff may contact families to offer support and help remove barriers to learning.

Safeguarding and Online Safety

All online platforms used for remote learning are monitored and supported through BCCET and the Trust IT team to help ensure safe and secure access for pupils and staff.

The school’s usual expectations for behaviour and respectful conduct apply during remote learning.

For live lessons:

  • Pupils should wear appropriate clothing
  • Pupils should work in a family space, rather than bedrooms
  • An adult family member should remain within hearing distance during live sessions

Any safeguarding concerns should be directed to Mrs Noble through the school office email.
