Mini Police – Year 5

This week, our Year 5 students had the incredible opportunity to work alongside the Mini Police from Durham Constabulary and DAAC. The students learned all about the essential roles and responsibilities of the police, as well as how they help keep our communities safe.

They started with an exciting discussion on Durham’s Dog Unit. The students were thrilled to learn about the highly trained police dogs and their handlers. They learned about the dogs’ vital role in detecting drugs, searching for missing people, and even helping to apprehend suspects.

Next, the students were introduced to Air Support, learning about the powerful role helicopters play in policing. The Mini Police explained how the helicopters help track suspects from the sky, providing crucial support to ground units and ensuring that dangerous situations are dealt with swiftly and safely. The children were fascinated by the technology involved and the ways the police can respond quickly to emergencies, even from the air.

Finally, the students had an insightful discussion about anti-social behaviour. They explored what constitutes anti-social behaviour, why it is harmful to communities, and what the police are doing to tackle it. The Mini Police officers encouraged the children to be active participants in making their local areas safer by being mindful of their actions and helping others.
