At St Cuthbert’s we teach Spanish from Y2 onwards. We began using the scheme of work developed by primary and secondary specialists in Bishop Chadwick CET in Spring 2022 and this ensures that our pupils have strong links with the catholic secondary schools in our academy trust.
In Year 2 languages are taught within a ‘Library of Languages’. We have a series of recorded stories in Spanish and each story is accompanied by a presentation covering key vocabulary. Children learn basic greetings and counting to ten through daily classroom routine. By Summer of Year 2, pupils will progress to more formal language lessons, which will follow the same structure to year 6 although with more of a focus on listening and speaking than reading and writing.
Substantive knowledge across KS2 is developed across all four skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) and is intertwined with the disciplinary knowledge of grammar and phonics.
